CI and test infrastructure / AWS CodeBuild alternative

AWS CodeBuild alternative

CodeBuild runs builds and tests, with on-demand or reserved compute and a debug sandbox for custom commands and SSH troubleshooting. Those modes have different billing clocks and capacity commitments. A returning agent’s durable machine lifecycle is a separate requirement from CI artifacts or an image-layer cache.

When AWS CodeBuild fits

CodeBuild fits teams needing AWS-integrated build projects, buildspec execution, artifacts, IAM and managed CI capacity. Retain that workflow integration where needed; using a Linux runtime does not automatically recreate a CodeBuild project or pipeline.

When to consider Sandbox0

Consider Sandbox0 when the agent’s complete writable environment should persist across tasks and grow online, with supported files available while compute is paused. You supply CI/job scheduling, AWS artifact/IAM adapters and any required build isolation integration.

Online RootFS growth

On growth-enabled images, Sandbox0 automatically expands the writable RootFS as free space runs low, within a configured sparse logical ceiling up to 64 TiB. Agent processes keep running. Growth is enabled in the qualified Cloud region; confirm activation for other regions. Existing images and snapshots retain their captured storage geometry. The ceiling is logical capacity, not preallocated host disk.

CodeBuild caches, artifacts and debug access are useful build features. The reviewed sources do not establish automatic growth of a complete durable RootFS retained as the same returning agent environment. Reserved machine capacity and persistent application state are different contracts.

Files while compute is paused

Sandbox0's Files API reads persistent files without resuming compute. Filesystem-only pauses also permit edits; retained-memory pauses are read-only and reject mutations with 409. SSH, SFTP, file watching, and runtime-only mounts require running compute.

The debug guide’s command and SSH actions use running compute. Reading stored build logs or S3 artifacts is not supported file access to a complete paused guest RootFS; that broader interface is not established here.

The billing clock depends on the compute mode

EC2 on-demand builds round usage up to minutes; Lambda build usage is measured in seconds. Reserved EC2 capacity has a 60-minute minimum and Mac reservations a 24-hour minimum. Debug Sandbox usage runs from start to termination and rounds to seconds; the normal CodeBuild free tier does not cover Sandbox or reserved capacity.

Debug Sandbox is a build troubleshooting surface

The official guide describes running custom commands and connecting through SSH to debug a project, then stopping the sandbox when troubleshooting ends. That is a useful interactive environment; the guide does not establish a returning whole-RootFS snapshot/recovery contract after termination.

Stored build assets and a complete machine are different resources

Build artifacts, external storage, logs and image-layer cache can survive a job under their own policies. Image-server cache-at-rest remains billable until disabled. The quotas page lists a maximum build timeout of 2,160 minutes; do not apply that figure indiscriminately to every compute mode or infer indefinite machine retention.

Pricing

Compare billing models, then price your workload

CPU allocation, memory, billing minimums, disk, plan fees, and supported workload differ. These meters are not equal-performance machine quotes. Confirm region, resource units, and included allowances before estimating a total.

Numerical amounts above are explicitly AWS’s worked-example rates, not a universal live regional quote. Current compute type, region and purchase mode matter. Free-tier build allowances cannot be moved into Sandbox usage. Logs, S3, data transfer, image-server/cache and other AWS services can be additional charges. No equal-hardware or universal savings conclusion is drawn from these examples.

$0.015/GiB-hour compute (billed by the second at approximately $0.000004167/GiB-second), plus $0.02/GiB-month of retained incremental RootFS and memory checkpoint data. Shared base images and platform recovery retention are excluded; paused sandboxes accrue storage charges only.

A 4 GiB agent, 100 running hours

$6.00 compute

4 GiB × 100 hours, billed by the second. Keeping 20 GiB of billable incremental data for a full billing month adds $0.40. CPU is derived from memory by the platform; choose a tier that fits your workload.

Before migrating from AWS CodeBuild

  1. Inventory buildspecs, project/resource modes, AWS roles, caches/artifacts, timeout settings and regional price assumptions.
  2. Retain or choose a CI control plane and integrate Sandbox0 explicitly for compatible returning-agent execution.
  3. Test repeated builds/tasks, retained system tools, growth, paused files, permissions and all compute/storage/AWS charges.

Common questions

Is Sandbox0 a drop-in AWS CodeBuild replacement?

Evaluate API compatibility and product scope. These products serve different core workflows, so a change may require a different architecture.

Does keeping files also keep a running agent?

Filesystem state and volatile process state are separate. Sandbox0 requires explicit compatible memory checkpoints to preserve running processes; its default filesystem resume starts fresh processes.
