GitHub Copilot cloud sandboxes alternative

GitHub Copilot cloud sandboxes move interactive Copilot work into isolated hosted Linux environments. Stopped sessions save files, environment variables and in-progress work for restoration. This is an integrated agent experience, with a different access and lifecycle contract from a general-purpose sandbox API.

When GitHub Copilot cloud sandboxes fits

Choose Copilot cloud sandboxes for an integrated interactive Copilot CLI/app experience, cross-device continuation and GitHub identity/governance. Keep that harness and session interface if it is the user experience you need.

When to consider Sandbox0

Consider Sandbox0 when you need an independent runtime API for your chosen agents, whole-RootFS online growth and supported paused-file operations. Agent UI, model credentials, collaboration and GitHub policy integration remain separate responsibilities.

Online RootFS growth

On growth-enabled images, Sandbox0 automatically expands the writable RootFS as free space runs low, within a configured sparse logical ceiling up to 64 TiB. Agent processes keep running. Growth is enabled in the qualified Cloud region; confirm activation for other regions. Existing images and snapshots retain their captured storage geometry. The ceiling is logical capacity, not preallocated host disk.

Copilot cloud sandboxes already preserve stopped session state. The reviewed Copilot interface does not establish automatic online RootFS growth or a configurable growing-disk contract exposed to arbitrary runtime clients.

Files while compute is paused

Sandbox0's Files API reads persistent files without resuming compute. Filesystem-only pauses also permit edits; retained-memory pauses are read-only and reject mutations with 409. SSH, SFTP, file watching, and runtime-only mounts require running compute.

Copilot restores stopped sessions for continued work. Snapshot storage billing does not establish a full-RootFS file API that can read and mutate files while guest compute remains stopped.

The cloud session and its snapshot have separate states

Stopping saves state for later restoration; deleting removes both the session and its snapshot. The service is built on Azure Container Apps Sandboxes, but that backing platform’s capabilities should not automatically be assumed to exist in every Copilot-facing interface.

Cloud access is an experimental interactive surface

Current docs require experimental cloud sandbox access and restrict the CLI to interactive sessions: cloud mode cannot be combined with programmatic -p or -i use. Organizations must enable the cloud access policy. This is not a drop-in API for arbitrary headless harnesses.

Stopped compute is free while snapshot storage continues

Running sessions accrue a compute-second meter plus allocated memory, rather than memory actually used. Stopped sessions accrue snapshot storage until deletion. The documented $10 preview entitlement expired at the end of July 2026; it should not be presented as a current ongoing allowance.

Pricing

Compare billing models, then price your workload

CPU allocation, memory, billing minimums, disk, plan fees, and supported workload differ. These meters are not equal-performance machine quotes. Confirm region, resource units, and included allowances before estimating a total.

Sandbox0

$0.015/GiB-hour compute (billed by the second at approximately $0.000004167/GiB-second), plus $0.02/GiB-month of retained incremental RootFS and memory checkpoint data. Shared base images and platform recovery retention are excluded; paused sandboxes accrue storage charges only.

A 4 GiB agent, 100 running hours

$6.00 compute

4 GiB × 100 hours, billed by the second. Keeping 20 GiB of billable incremental data for a full billing month adds $0.40. CPU is derived from memory by the platform; choose a tier that fits your workload.

Before migrating from GitHub Copilot cloud sandboxes

  1. Record session owner, repository, organization policy, experimental access, saved state and snapshot retention costs.
  2. Export essential files and configure your chosen harness on Sandbox0 with explicit model credentials and collaboration requirements.
  3. Test system paths, online growth, process expectations, paused files and combined runtime, snapshots, model and seat charges.

Common questions

Is Sandbox0 a drop-in GitHub Copilot cloud sandboxes replacement?

Evaluate API compatibility and product scope. These products serve different core workflows, so a change may require a different architecture.

Does keeping files also keep a running agent?

Filesystem state and volatile process state are separate. Sandbox0 requires explicit compatible memory checkpoints to preserve running processes; its default filesystem resume starts fresh processes.
