Application platforms / Heroic Labs alternative

A Heroic Labs alternative for the agent execution layer

Heroic Labs builds the Nakama multiplayer backend, Hiro toolkit, Satori LiveOps and Heroic Cloud. Its managed game stack includes dedicated production resources and databases. That is a specialized application backend rather than a general-purpose computer for an agent; compare the layer the application actually needs.

When Heroic Labs fits

Heroic Labs fits games needing multiplayer, player data, leaderboards, social features and LiveOps with managed production operations. Those application features are substantial requirements that a Linux sandbox does not supply automatically.

When to consider Sandbox0

Consider Sandbox0 for compatible Linux agents that build, test or operate software and need installed tools and user files on a durable whole writable RootFS. Retain the required multiplayer and player-data services as separate integrations.

Online RootFS growth

On growth-enabled images, Sandbox0 automatically expands the writable RootFS as free space runs low, within a configured sparse logical ceiling up to 64 TiB. Agent processes keep running. Growth is enabled in the qualified Cloud region; confirm activation for other regions. Existing images and snapshots retain their captured storage geometry. The ceiling is logical capacity, not preallocated host disk.

Heroic Cloud scales application CPU tiers and database resources, with rolling restarts and database constraints. That is different from automatically extending a running agent’s complete writable RootFS as free space runs low.

Files while compute is paused

Sandbox0's Files API reads persistent files without resuming compute. Filesystem-only pauses also permit edits; retained-memory pauses are read-only and reject mutations with 409. SSH, SFTP, file watching, and runtime-only mounts require running compute.

Durable player data and a durable operating system differ

Heroic Cloud includes a managed database, backups and deployment data export. Nakama storage objects and application records are useful durable state, but they do not establish a complete mutable Linux RootFS for arbitrary agent-installed packages. Custom server code follows its own build and deployment workflow.

Scaling changes application nodes

Production Nakama nodes and the database scale independently; development instances use shared, non-scalable infrastructure. Tier changes trigger rolling reboots, and existing WebSocket clients must reconnect. Authoritative matches need application cooperation for graceful migration. These operations should not be described as transparent restoration of an arbitrary process checkpoint.

Resource tiers and billing belong to the game stack

The public Nakama calculator currently renders a $600/month reference configuration; its actual cost depends on Nakama and database CPU choices. Satori starts at $600/month under separate terms. The deployment guide uses the highest recorded CPU count in a day for that day’s charge, rather than a generic per-second sandbox meter.

Compare billing models, then price your workload

CPU allocation, memory, billing minimums, disk, plan fees, and supported workload differ. These meters are not equal-performance machine quotes. Confirm region, resource units, and included allowances before estimating a total.

Sandbox0

$0.015/GiB-hour compute (billed by the second at approximately $0.000004167/GiB-second), plus $0.02/GiB-month of retained incremental RootFS and memory checkpoint data. Shared base images and platform recovery retention are excluded; paused sandboxes accrue storage charges only.

A 4 GiB agent, 100 running hours

$6.00 compute

4 GiB × 100 hours, billed by the second. Keeping 20 GiB of billable incremental data for a full billing month adds $0.40. CPU is derived from memory by the platform; choose a tier that fits your workload.

Before migrating from Heroic Labs

  1. Inventory Nakama modules, Satori events, player data, databases, match migration and client SDK dependencies.
  2. Retain the game-specific backend or choose an explicit replacement; port only compatible Linux agent build, test and operations tasks.
  3. Validate application behavior, credentials and data exports separately from agent system-path retention, online growth, paused files and compute costs.

Common questions

Is Sandbox0 a drop-in Heroic Labs replacement?

Evaluate API compatibility and product scope. These products serve different core workflows, so a change may require a different architecture.

Does keeping files also keep a running agent?

Filesystem state and volatile process state are separate. Sandbox0 requires explicit compatible memory checkpoints to preserve running processes; its default filesystem resume starts fresh processes.
