A Lightning AI alternative for the durable Linux execution layer

Lightning AI combines development Studios, model/GPU workflows, shared storage and separate programmatic Sandboxes. Those products have different resource and lifecycle contracts. Compare the selected execution surface with a returning Linux agent computer rather than apply Studio benefits or GPU pricing to every Sandbox call.

When Lightning AI fits

Lightning AI fits teams needing GPU development, model training/serving, collaboration and shared datasets. Its separate Linux Sandbox API also supports programmatic code execution. Keep GPU and platform requirements explicit; Sandbox0’s Linux runtime is not a replacement for the entire ML platform.

When to consider Sandbox0

Consider Sandbox0 for compatible Linux workloads centered on durable installed system tools, configuration, accumulating files, online RootFS growth and paused file access. Retain training, GPU compute, model hosting and collaborative development separately where required.

Online RootFS growth

On growth-enabled images, Sandbox0 automatically expands the writable RootFS as free space runs low, within a configured sparse logical ceiling up to 64 TiB. Agent processes keep running. Growth is enabled in the qualified Cloud region; confirm activation for other regions. Existing images and snapshots retain their captured storage geometry. The ceiling is logical capacity, not preallocated host disk.

Lightning AI retains Studio home and shared Drive data, and supports manual expansion of high-performance volumes. Those features do not establish automatic online expansion of the entire durable Linux RootFS for an agent. Compare the selected product’s system-path and resize semantics.

Files while compute is paused

Sandbox0's Files API reads persistent files without resuming compute. Filesystem-only pauses also permit edits; retained-memory pauses are read-only and reject mutations with 409. SSH, SFTP, file watching, and runtime-only mounts require running compute.

Lightning Drive exposes stored data independently of a particular Studio. This shared-data service is distinct from accessing the full persistent RootFS of a paused Sandbox0 sandbox.

Studio environment persistence has a documented home scope

The Studio guide retains installed packages and files in Studio home across stops. It does not establish that every mutable system path or live process is restored. The separate Sandbox guide describes isolated Linux execution with configurable machine shapes; do not silently transfer Studio retention or free-plan terms to that API.

A shared Drive and a high-performance volume are different storage

Lightning Drive shares data across teamspace workloads. Its high-performance volumes are separately provisioned, tied to a compute location/region and manually growable with Resize. They are not browser-browsable Drive buckets. This is genuine persistent storage and resizing, with a different scope from automatic growth of a complete agent RootFS.

Plan fees, runtime credits and stored bytes need separate accounting

The public price page distinguishes monthly and annual commitments and says the free CPU Studio needs restarts every four hours. That is not free unlimited GPU execution. The billing guide separately meters paid machines and stored data, while the Sandbox product requires its own effective resource-rate check.

Pricing

Compare billing models, then price your workload

CPU allocation, memory, billing minimums, disk, plan fees, and supported workload differ. These meters are not equal-performance machine quotes. Confirm region, resource units, and included allowances before estimating a total.

These published plan amounts do not establish a universal Sandbox CPU rate or an all-in GPU workload cost. Monthly/annual credits and storage limits differ; confirm account-effective allowances. The price page and billing/Drive docs disagree on some free-tier total storage limits, so no universal quota is asserted. GB and GiB storage meters are preserved.

$0.015/GiB-hour compute (billed by the second at approximately $0.000004167/GiB-second), plus $0.02/GiB-month of retained incremental RootFS and memory checkpoint data. Shared base images and platform recovery retention are excluded; paused sandboxes accrue storage charges only.

Before migrating from Lightning AI

  1. Identify Studio versus Sandbox API usage, home/system state, Drive and high-performance volumes, GPU dependencies, credits and current account limits.
  2. Port compatible Linux agent execution to Sandbox0 while retaining the GPU, model, data and collaborative products required by the workflow.
  3. Test system-wide retention, growing files, paused access and process restart behavior, then compare complete plan/compute/storage/model costs.

Common questions

Is Sandbox0 a drop-in Lightning AI replacement?

Evaluate API compatibility and product scope. These products serve different core workflows, so a change may require a different architecture.

Does keeping files also keep a running agent?

Filesystem state and volatile process state are separate. Sandbox0 requires explicit compatible memory checkpoints to preserve running processes; its default filesystem resume starts fresh processes.
