A Maritime alternative for the persistent Linux execution layer

Maritime packages managed agents and desktop Computers around persistent cloud machines. It supports memory-preserving sleep, but retained paths and memory windows differ by product. Compare its machine inventory and awake-slot subscription with Sandbox0’s runtime layer for long-lived, growing agent computers.

When Maritime fits

Maritime fits teams wanting managed agent setup, platform schedules and desktop Computers rather than assembling those product functions around an execution API. Keep its hosted desktop and agent services in the requirements when evaluating another runtime.

When to consider Sandbox0

Consider Sandbox0 when compatible Linux agents need installed packages, system configuration and files across the whole writable RootFS, automatic online expansion and supported file access during compute pauses. Desktop presentation, schedules and managed agent features still require an application layer.

Online RootFS growth

On growth-enabled images, Sandbox0 automatically expands the writable RootFS as free space runs low, within a configured sparse logical ceiling up to 64 TiB. Agent processes keep running. Growth is enabled in the qualified Cloud region; confirm activation for other regions. Existing images and snapshots retain their captured storage geometry. The ceiling is logical capacity, not preallocated host disk.

Maritime configuration allows explicit RAM and disk changes, with a published 8 GB RAM and 100 GB disk ceiling. The reviewed sources do not establish free-space-triggered automatic online growth of the whole writable RootFS. Retained /data and desktop-profile paths are a separate persistence contract.

Files while compute is paused

Sandbox0's Files API reads persistent files without resuming compute. Filesystem-only pauses also permit edits; retained-memory pauses are read-only and reject mutations with 409. SSH, SFTP, file watching, and runtime-only mounts require running compute.

Maritime’s limits guide says file and execution API calls wake sleeping machines. Sandbox0 supports persistent Files API reads while paused and mutations during filesystem-only pauses without waking guest compute; memory checkpoints remain protected.

Sleep memory and durable paths answer different questions

Maritime agents keep /data across restart, redeploy and sleep; other paths are disposable across restart/redeploy. Sleep preserves execution state rather than merely rerunning the application. Desktop Computers retain /data and /home/desk until deletion, and their saved memory lasts seven days after the last action before a fresh boot with disk retained.

An agent slot is not an always-awake machine

Plans separately bound machines and simultaneously awake machines. A sleeping machine retains its inventory slot while releasing awake capacity; requests can fail when awake capacity is exhausted. Computers sleep after five idle minutes, with a short closing grace period. Timers inside sleeping machines do not fire; use the platform scheduler where appropriate.

Hosting plans and model credits are separate costs

Each paid-plan base machine includes 1 vCPU, 2 GB RAM and 5 GB SSD. RAM/disk upgrades and always-on behavior add recurring charges. The model proxy uses separate prepaid AI credits, so a hosting plan’s absence of token metering must not be interpreted as unlimited included model inference.

Compare billing models, then price your workload

CPU allocation, memory, billing minimums, disk, plan fees, and supported workload differ. These meters are not equal-performance machine quotes. Confirm region, resource units, and included allowances before estimating a total.

The Free plan has three agent slots and one awake slot; Computers require a paid plan. Retained sleeping machines still use plan inventory. Preserve GB labels, distinguish total from awake slots, and add model-proxy credits or provider charges separately.

Sandbox0

$0.015/GiB-hour compute (billed by the second at approximately $0.000004167/GiB-second), plus $0.02/GiB-month of retained incremental RootFS and memory checkpoint data. Shared base images and platform recovery retention are excluded; paused sandboxes accrue storage charges only.

A 4 GiB agent, 100 running hours

$6.00 compute

4 GiB × 100 hours, billed by the second. Keeping 20 GiB of billable incremental data for a full billing month adds $0.40. CPU is derived from memory by the platform; choose a tier that fits your workload.

Before migrating from Maritime

  1. Export /data and Computer /home/desk, agent definitions, schedules, desktop profiles and credential references before deleting a machine.
  2. Recreate compatible Linux tools and agent logic on Sandbox0 and retain or replace desktop access, model routing and platform schedules explicitly.
  3. Test installed files outside selected data paths, online RootFS growth, pause/process requirements, file-only access and subscription/add-on/model totals.

Common questions

Is Sandbox0 a drop-in Maritime replacement?

Evaluate API compatibility and product scope. These products serve different core workflows, so a change may require a different architecture.

Does keeping files also keep a running agent?

Filesystem state and volatile process state are separate. Sandbox0 requires explicit compatible memory checkpoints to preserve running processes; its default filesystem resume starts fresh processes.
