Agent sandboxes / Omnara alternative

Evaluating Omnara alternatives for a persistent agent computer

Omnara operates the agent control plane and can attach managed pool machines or your own computers. Sandbox0 supplies a persistent Linux runtime beneath an agent application. Decide which platform responsibilities you need before comparing the underlying machines.

When Omnara fits

Omnara fits teams that want managed agent orchestration, conversation and event history, machine grants, and a choice of execution providers or connected computers. Its default managed pool uses Blaxel and supports sleeping with retained process state.

When to consider Sandbox0

Consider Sandbox0 when your application owns the agent harness and needs a per-user durable RootFS, automatic online disk growth, and supported Files API access while compute stays paused. Recreate any orchestration and user-facing agent controls your product needs.

Online RootFS growth

On growth-enabled images, Sandbox0 automatically expands the writable RootFS as free space runs low, within a configured sparse logical ceiling up to 64 TiB. Agent processes keep running. Growth is enabled in the qualified Cloud region; confirm activation for other regions. Existing images and snapshots retain their captured storage geometry. The ceiling is logical capacity, not preallocated host disk.

Omnara pool configuration selects a provider and image or snapshot. The reviewed platform guides do not establish a uniform automatically growing RootFS across all adapters; evaluate the underlying machine’s storage contract.

Files while compute is paused

Sandbox0's Files API reads persistent files without resuming compute. Filesystem-only pauses also permit edits; retained-memory pauses are read-only and reject mutations with 409. SSH, SFTP, file watching, and runtime-only mounts require running compute.

Agent history and machine state have different lifetimes

A pool machine keeps files, dependencies, and supported running processes across turns and provider sleep. Archiving the agent, removing its pool source, explicit deletion, or idle-deletion policy can delete that machine. A replacement starts from the pool’s original image or snapshot; retained conversation events do not restore the deleted machine’s newer files.

Sleep semantics follow the selected provider adapter

Omnara documents memory-preserving sleep for supported adapters, including its default Blaxel pool. Other adapters keep machines running rather than sleeping. These are Omnara integration behaviors, so confirm the selected adapter and configured sleep and deletion policies instead of applying one checkpoint promise to every provider.

Retention is priced by machine memory, not stored file bytes

Omnara lists a free platform with managed runtime and retention charges, plus model tokens at provider rates. Its retention meter uses the machine’s GiB of memory for each retained 30-day period. Sandbox0 retained-storage pricing uses incremental stored data, so the two GiB-denominated rates measure different resources.

CPU allocation, memory, billing minimums, disk, plan fees, and supported workload differ. These meters are not equal-performance machine quotes. Confirm region, resource units, and included allowances before estimating a total.

Bring-your-own model keys and machines are supported without a platform fee. Managed retention continues in addition to online runtime. Account for the selected provider, pool policy, model usage, and any enterprise deployment terms; Sandbox0 compute does not include an equivalent managed agent platform.

Before migrating from Omnara

  1. Inventory agents, pool bindings, image or snapshot IDs, tools, model settings, sleep policy, and idle-deletion rules.
  2. Export required machine files before archiving an agent or removing a pool, and retain conversation and event data separately.
  3. Choose the harness and model integration to run with Sandbox0, port machine tools and credentials, and validate RootFS growth, paused files, and required process restoration.

Common questions

Is Sandbox0 a drop-in Omnara replacement?

Evaluate API compatibility and product scope. A shared sandbox category does not make SDKs, lifecycle semantics, or limits interchangeable.

Does keeping files also keep a running agent?

Filesystem state and volatile process state are separate. Sandbox0 requires explicit compatible memory checkpoints to preserve running processes; its default filesystem resume starts fresh processes.
