Workflow orchestration / Rescale HPC and Workstations alternative

A Rescale alternative for the Linux agent around engineering jobs

Rescale manages engineering computation, licensed applications, HPC jobs and cloud workstations. Its workstation suspension already preserves installed software, configuration and files. The choice depends on whether you need that engineering platform or a general-purpose agent runtime with its own storage and compute lifecycle.

When Rescale HPC and Workstations fits

Rescale fits engineering simulation, solver licensing, HPC capacity and managed workstations. Its durable workstation disk is useful existing functionality; retain required software and HPC services when moving an agent workflow.

When to consider Sandbox0

Consider Sandbox0 for compatible Linux agents that need whole writable RootFS retention, automatic free-space-triggered growth and supported file operations while guest compute remains paused. Engineering applications, licenses and accelerator work remain separate requirements.

Online RootFS growth

On growth-enabled images, Sandbox0 automatically expands the writable RootFS as free space runs low, within a configured sparse logical ceiling up to 64 TiB. Agent processes keep running. Growth is enabled in the qualified Cloud region; confirm activation for other regions. Existing images and snapshots retain their captured storage geometry. The ceiling is logical capacity, not preallocated host disk.

Rescale already preserves installed software and system configuration through workstation suspension. Workstation sizing and persistent filestore do not by themselves establish automatic online growth of the complete agent RootFS.

Files while compute is paused

Sandbox0's Files API reads persistent files without resuming compute. Filesystem-only pauses also permit edits; retained-memory pauses are read-only and reject mutations with 409. SSH, SFTP, file watching, and runtime-only mounts require running compute.

Workstation suspension preserves the whole disk

Suspend powers down workstation compute while saving installed software, settings and files on its disk. Running applications stop, so disk continuity must not be described as process or RAM continuation. Resuming also depends on available hardware capacity.

Compute stops charging while a platform license can continue

The suspension guide says compute and Workstation license charges stop, but Platform license charges continue. Persistent filestore and other retained services have their own costs. A suspended workstation is therefore not necessarily a zero-invoice workstation.

Suspend and Stop have materially different outcomes

The guide warns that choosing Stop for an already suspended workstation terminates its cluster without saving files. Job duplication separately reuses job configuration and inputs; it is not evidence of an in-memory workstation fork. Verify the exact operation before automating lifecycle changes.

Compare billing models, then price your workload

CPU allocation, memory, billing minimums, disk, plan fees, and supported workload differ. These meters are not equal-performance machine quotes. Confirm region, resource units, and included allowances before estimating a total.

$6.00 compute

4 GiB × 100 hours, billed by the second. Keeping 20 GiB of billable incremental data for a full billing month adds $0.40. CPU is derived from memory by the platform; choose a tier that fits your workload.

Before migrating from Rescale HPC and Workstations

  1. Inventory HPC jobs, solver and platform licenses, workstation-installed software and persistent filestore.
  2. Export required files and configuration using the documented suspension lifecycle, and retain engineering services that remain necessary.
  3. Port compatible Linux agents; test full-system retention, growth, paused files and license charges independently of simulation performance.

Common questions

Is Sandbox0 a drop-in Rescale HPC and Workstations replacement?

Evaluate API compatibility and product scope. These products serve different core workflows, so a change may require a different architecture.

Does keeping files also keep a running agent?

Filesystem state and volatile process state are separate. Sandbox0 requires explicit compatible memory checkpoints to preserve running processes; its default filesystem resume starts fresh processes.
