Agent sandboxes / SeaCloudAI Sandbox alternative

SeaCloudAI sandbox alternative

SeaCloudAI’s current Python SDK provides cloud sandboxes with commands, files, PTY, service proxying, code execution and reusable template builds. It documents pause/connect, but not an arbitrary snapshot API or a complete host-loss durability contract. Compare the SDK surface separately from the production service guarantees.

When SeaCloudAI Sandbox fits

SeaCloudAI fits teams wanting a familiar E2B-style workflow and its available gateway/template ecosystem. Official base and code-interpreter templates cover different tasks; agent CLI templates are available only where that environment publishes them.

When to consider Sandbox0

Consider Sandbox0 when the complete installed Linux environment should be durable and grow online, with supported file operations during compute pause. Port SDK/lifecycle and service-proxy integrations deliberately rather than assuming identical behavior from similar method names.

Online RootFS growth

On growth-enabled images, Sandbox0 automatically expands the writable RootFS as free space runs low, within a configured sparse logical ceiling up to 64 TiB. Agent processes keep running. Growth is enabled in the qualified Cloud region; confirm activation for other regions. Existing images and snapshots retain their captured storage geometry. The ceiling is logical capacity, not preallocated host disk.

SeaCloudAI documents template baking and file APIs. Its SDK reference does not establish automatic online whole-RootFS expansion or regional recovery of committed system state. Confirm those backend guarantees before selecting it for accumulated agent state.

Files while compute is paused

Sandbox0's Files API reads persistent files without resuming compute. Filesystem-only pauses also permit edits; retained-memory pauses are read-only and reject mutations with 409. SSH, SFTP, file watching, and runtime-only mounts require running compute.

The SDK presents file operations within a connected sandbox workflow, with pause/connect separately. It does not establish supported complete RootFS reads and writes while guest compute stays paused.

Prepared templates are not arbitrary live snapshots

The official README describes baking stable setup into reusable templates. It explicitly says snapshot APIs are not exposed because the platform does not support them. That does not invalidate template reuse, but it is a different operation from snapshotting a returning agent’s current machine state.

Code-context state depends on the language

Python contexts are documented as stateful. Other language contexts currently act as reusable execution profiles over isolated one-shot processes. A context identifier therefore does not mean every language keeps a live process, and none of those context rules alone establish durable recovery after a node failure.

Pause and connect need backend-specific qualification

The README demonstrates pause followed by connect and distinguishes lifecycle timeouts in seconds from command timeouts in milliseconds. It does not specify complete RootFS retention, arbitrary RAM restoration or a public numeric rate card. Confirm the deployed backend’s preserved state, recovery policy and account terms.

$0.015/GiB-hour compute (billed by the second at approximately $0.000004167/GiB-second), plus $0.02/GiB-month of retained incremental RootFS and memory checkpoint data. Shared base images and platform recovery retention are excluded; paused sandboxes accrue storage charges only.

A 4 GiB agent, 100 running hours

$6.00 compute

4 GiB × 100 hours, billed by the second. Keeping 20 GiB of billable incremental data for a full billing month adds $0.40. CPU is derived from memory by the platform; choose a tier that fits your workload.

Before migrating from SeaCloudAI Sandbox

  1. Inventory gateway/API root, template references, language-context semantics, lifecycle timeouts and the effective commercial terms.
  2. Export required files and rebuild stable tools in a Sandbox0 template; port commands, PTY, files and service proxying explicitly.
  3. Test system-state retention, failure recovery, online RootFS growth, paused files and full compute/template/storage/model costs.

Common questions

Is Sandbox0 a drop-in SeaCloudAI Sandbox replacement?

Evaluate API compatibility and product scope. A shared sandbox category does not make SDKs, lifecycle semantics, or limits interchangeable.

Does keeping files also keep a running agent?

Filesystem state and volatile process state are separate. Sandbox0 requires explicit compatible memory checkpoints to preserve running processes; its default filesystem resume starts fresh processes.
