Application platforms / Wasmer Edge alternative

A Wasmer Edge alternative for the agent’s Linux environment

Wasmer provides a WebAssembly runtime and Wasmer Edge application hosting. Edge apps can use persistent mounted volumes, remote S3-compatible access and managed application infrastructure. Its WASM/WASIX execution model and selected app volumes are distinct from a general-purpose Linux agent computer.

When Wasmer Edge fits

Wasmer Edge fits compatible web and network applications built for its runtime, global delivery and managed hosting. Its persistent volume and remote-file capabilities are real functionality to retain in a comparison.

When to consider Sandbox0

Choose Sandbox0 for compatible Linux agents that need installed native tools, system configuration and files across a complete durable writable RootFS, with automatic online growth and supported paused files. Check runtime compatibility when porting an app or agent.

Online RootFS growth

On growth-enabled images, Sandbox0 automatically expands the writable RootFS as free space runs low, within a configured sparse logical ceiling up to 64 TiB. Agent processes keep running. Growth is enabled in the qualified Cloud region; confirm activation for other regions. Existing images and snapshots retain their captured storage geometry. The ceiling is logical capacity, not preallocated host disk.

Regional app-volume storage is separate from a complete mutable Linux RootFS. The reviewed Edge contract does not establish automatic online expansion of the whole agent OS filesystem.

Files while compute is paused

Sandbox0's Files API reads persistent files without resuming compute. Filesystem-only pauses also permit edits; retained-memory pauses are read-only and reject mutations with 409. SSH, SFTP, file watching, and runtime-only mounts require running compute.

Wasmer already supports enabled S3-compatible volume access and a dashboard file explorer. Sandbox0’s comparison is supported access to the durable writable RootFS while guest compute remains paused, with filesystem-only mutations and retained-memory reads.

Persistent volumes have regional and concurrency constraints

Volumes mount at selected app paths and currently stay within one Edge region. The guide describes read-write-many access and warns that the current implementation is unsuitable for databases requiring a single writer. Renaming or removing a volume in app configuration deletes its data on deployment, so volume identity is part of the data lifecycle.

Remote file access already includes S3-compatible clients

Once enabled, each volume has credentials for S3-compatible access; the dashboard file explorer and SFTP offer other paths. This is durable application-volume access, rather than evidence that every changed runtime OS path is retained. The guide documents daily volume backups with a 24-hour recovery point objective.

Active CPU and provisioned memory are different meters

The Pro plan includes active CPU and provisioned-memory allowances, followed by distinct overage rates. The page advertises fast website pause/resume, while the architecture describes on-demand WASM workloads. Neither description establishes an arbitrary Linux guest RAM checkpoint contract for agent processes.

Pricing

Compare billing models, then price your workload

CPU allocation, memory, billing minimums, disk, plan fees, and supported workload differ. These meters are not equal-performance machine quotes. Confirm region, resource units, and included allowances before estimating a total.

The plan also has bandwidth, request, app, database, build and other limits. Storage overage labels show $0.05 per GB without an explicit period in the table, so confirm that meter before estimating a storage bill. Active CPU time and provisioned memory are distinct; hosted plan fees do not price the standalone runtime.

$6.00 compute

4 GiB × 100 hours, billed by the second. Keeping 20 GiB of billable incremental data for a full billing month adds $0.40. CPU is derived from memory by the platform; choose a tier that fits your workload.

Before migrating from Wasmer Edge

  1. Inventory WASM/WASIX compatibility, application builds, named regional volumes, credentials and concurrent-writer requirements.
  2. Export volume data before renaming/removing mounts and port only compatible Linux agent execution and needed app behavior.
  3. Test app correctness separately from full-system retention, online growth, paused files and active-CPU/provisioned-memory costs.

Common questions

Is Sandbox0 a drop-in Wasmer Edge replacement?

Evaluate API compatibility and product scope. These products serve different core workflows, so a change may require a different architecture.

Does keeping files also keep a running agent?

Filesystem state and volatile process state are separate. Sandbox0 requires explicit compatible memory checkpoints to preserve running processes; its default filesystem resume starts fresh processes.
