Windows compute / Windows 365 Business / Enterprise Cloud PC alternative

Windows 365 Cloud PC alternative for portable agent stages

Windows 365 Business and Enterprise provide a returning personal Cloud PC with Windows applications and data. That differs from the stateless Windows 365 for Agents pool. Compare the named-user desktop, management model and subscription with compatible Linux agent work rather than treating every Cloud PC product as identical.

When Windows 365 Business / Enterprise Cloud PC fits

Choose personal Windows 365 for a managed Windows desktop, native applications and the required Microsoft administration model. Business and Enterprise have different limits/features, and supported app versions do not automatically define all included application entitlements.

When to consider Sandbox0

Consider Sandbox0 for compatible Linux agents that accumulate system tools and files, grow the durable whole RootFS online and access supported files with compute paused. Keep native Windows desktops and required applications on a suitable Windows service.

Online RootFS growth

On growth-enabled images, Sandbox0 automatically expands the writable RootFS as free space runs low, within a configured sparse logical ceiling up to 64 TiB. Agent processes keep running. Growth is enabled in the qualified Cloud region; confirm activation for other regions. Existing images and snapshots retain their captured storage geometry. The ceiling is logical capacity, not preallocated host disk.

Personal Cloud PCs already retain a full Windows desktop environment, and Enterprise Resize preserves disk data while changing supported resources. It is an explicit licensed resize, not an integrated automatic online low-space RootFS growth policy.

Files while compute is paused

Sandbox0's Files API reads persistent files without resuming compute. Filesystem-only pauses also permit edits; retained-memory pauses are read-only and reject mutations with 409. SSH, SFTP, file watching, and runtime-only mounts require running compute.

Desktop access and application/file integrations expose their respective data scope. The cited personal Cloud PC service does not establish a native arbitrary file API throughout a paused OS filesystem while guest compute remains off.

Personal desktop persistence differs from an agent pool

The personal Cloud PC is a returning Windows environment. Enterprise’s Resize action explicitly preserves user/disk data while changing eligible CPU, RAM and storage without reprovisioning. This should not be generalized to the reset-per-session Windows 365 for Agents product.

Resize preserves data, but is an explicit operation

Enterprise Resize can increase storage and change CPU/RAM; it cannot shrink disk space. It has eligibility and license/resource requirements. That operation is different from automatic low-free-space expansion of an agent’s complete durable system while its process continues running.

Business and Enterprise are different subscriptions

The US Business page lists a 2 vCPU/8 GB/128 GB plan at $36 per user-month; the Enterprise reference for the same nominal shape is $41. Management features, user limits and purchasing terms differ. These are monthly auto-renewing user subscriptions, not charges only while an agent executes.

Compare billing models, then price your workload

CPU allocation, memory, billing minimums, disk, plan fees, and supported workload differ. These meters are not equal-performance machine quotes. Confirm region, resource units, and included allowances before estimating a total.

Use the selected edition, shape, market, current licensing and tax terms. Business currently lists up to 300 users; Enterprise has different management and scale. Disconnecting does not turn a monthly seat subscription into active-second billing. Confirm application entitlements and cancellation/data-retention terms.

$0.015/GiB-hour compute (billed by the second at approximately $0.000004167/GiB-second), plus $0.02/GiB-month of retained incremental RootFS and memory checkpoint data. Shared base images and platform recovery retention are excluded; paused sandboxes accrue storage charges only.

Before migrating from Windows 365 Business / Enterprise Cloud PC

  1. Identify personal Business/Enterprise versus other Windows 365 products, current shape, installed apps/data, administration and subscription terms.
  2. Export portable agent files and recreate Linux-compatible stages while retaining required native Windows desktop/application work.
  3. Test handoff, durable system state, growth, paused files and combined desktop licenses/entitlements plus Linux runtime/storage costs.

Common questions

Is Sandbox0 a drop-in Windows 365 Business / Enterprise Cloud PC replacement?

Evaluate API compatibility and product scope. These products serve different core workflows, so a change may require a different architecture.

Does keeping files also keep a running agent?

Filesystem state and volatile process state are separate. Sandbox0 requires explicit compatible memory checkpoints to preserve running processes; its default filesystem resume starts fresh processes.
