A Zhipu Managed Agents alternative

Zhipu Z Managed Agents runs the agent loop, tools and session environments as a managed service. Its default output retention differs from optional system-disk checkpoints, which can preserve installed packages across turns. Compare both paths with the persistent computer layer your own agent would use on Sandbox0.

When Zhipu Z Managed Agents fits

Z Managed Agents fits applications wanting managed model/tool loops, events, MCP and skills, prepared environments and scheduled agent runs. Its API and console can reduce the application infrastructure needed to execute multi-step tasks.

When to consider Sandbox0

Consider Sandbox0 when your own compatible agent should keep installed software and system settings with user files on a durable writable RootFS that grows online. You must supply or retain the model integration, agent loop, events, skills and scheduling layer.

Online RootFS growth

On growth-enabled images, Sandbox0 automatically expands the writable RootFS as free space runs low, within a configured sparse logical ceiling up to 64 TiB. Agent processes keep running. Growth is enabled in the qualified Cloud region; confirm activation for other regions. Existing images and snapshots retain their captured storage geometry. The ceiling is logical capacity, not preallocated host disk.

Zhipu’s optional system-disk checkpoint is broader than output-directory persistence, but the reviewed sources do not establish automatic expansion of the mounted RootFS as free space runs low. Snapshot retention and restoration reliability are separate from Sandbox0’s online-growth contract.

Files while compute is paused

Sandbox0's Files API reads persistent files without resuming compute. Filesystem-only pauses also permit edits; retained-memory pauses are read-only and reject mutations with 409. SSH, SFTP, file watching, and runtime-only mounts require running compute.

Outputs persist by default; the system disk is opt-in

/mnt/session/outputs is retained across turns and cataloged for download. /workspace, /tmp and runtime-installed packages are not retained by the ordinary default. Creating a session with x-checkpoint:true enables system-disk snapshots with a one-to-30-day retention setting, defaulting to 30; some resource configurations can imply checkpointing. Stable dependencies can also be declared in Environment packages.

Checkpointing preserves disk, with a documented fresh-sandbox fallback

The session guide explicitly excludes running processes and memory. It attempts a disk snapshot after a successful turn and prefers the latest successful snapshot on the next turn; quota or backend failures can instead create a fresh sandbox. The guide therefore warns against treating the checkpoint as the only persistent store. Keep important downloadable artifacts in the output directory.

A model Coding Plan is not the Managed Agents bill

The service uses Open Platform API usage and does not accept Coding Plan quota. Model inference is billed at the selected model’s API rate. Environment and Web Search/Fetch tool fees are temporarily waived through October 31, 2026; this time-limited offer does not establish a permanent free runtime or the price after that date.

Compare billing models, then price your workload

CPU allocation, memory, billing minimums, disk, plan fees, and supported workload differ. These meters are not equal-performance machine quotes. Confirm region, resource units, and included allowances before estimating a total.

Before migrating from Zhipu Z Managed Agents

  1. Export output files, Memory Store content, agent/Environment definitions and credential references; identify checkpoint-enabled sessions and remaining retention days.
  2. Port compatible tools to Sandbox0 and implement or retain the model loop, SSE/history recovery, tool permissions, MCP, skills and scheduled tasks.
  3. Test installed packages and configuration outside outputs, full RootFS growth, disk versus process restoration, paused file access and billing after the temporary waiver.

Common questions

Is Sandbox0 a drop-in Zhipu Z Managed Agents replacement?

Evaluate API compatibility and product scope. These products serve different core workflows, so a change may require a different architecture.

Does keeping files also keep a running agent?

Filesystem state and volatile process state are separate. Sandbox0 requires explicit compatible memory checkpoints to preserve running processes; its default filesystem resume starts fresh processes.
