Agent testing / Chronicle Labs alternative

A Chronicle Labs agent testing alternative serves a different layer from compute

Chronicle Labs currently presents an agent testing and validation platform that derives scenarios from production workflows. Its staging and replay environment is a way to evaluate agent behavior, rather than a documented general-purpose machine API. Sandbox0 supplies the environment that executes an agent and retains its system state.

When Chronicle Labs fits

Choose Chronicle Labs when production-derived workflow coverage, replicated test environments, validation, and agent reliability analysis are the requirement. Confirm which integrations, evidence, and monitoring capabilities are included in the effective offer.

When to consider Sandbox0

Choose Sandbox0 for an agent’s Linux execution layer, including installed software, durable files, online RootFS growth, and supported paused file operations. It does not supply Chronicle’s workflow reconstruction, scenario generation, or evaluation product as a built-in replacement.

Online RootFS growth

On growth-enabled images, Sandbox0 automatically expands the writable RootFS as free space runs low, within a configured sparse logical ceiling up to 64 TiB. Agent processes keep running. Growth is enabled in the qualified Cloud region; confirm activation for other regions. Existing images and snapshots retain their captured storage geometry. The ceiling is logical capacity, not preallocated host disk.

Chronicle’s replay and test-state products address agent validation, not automatic RootFS expansion. Sandbox0’s online growth concerns the execution computer and can complement a separate testing system.

Files while compute is paused

Sandbox0's Files API reads persistent files without resuming compute. Filesystem-only pauses also permit edits; retained-memory pauses are read-only and reject mutations with 409. SSH, SFTP, file watching, and runtime-only mounts require running compute.

Business-workflow replay is different from execution-state recovery

Chronicle describes turning production data into staging scenarios and replaying agent workflows before release. A replay of business events does not establish retention of the agent’s Linux filesystem, RAM, open handles, or exact process continuation. Keep the testing data model separate from the runner’s machine lifecycle.

Evaluate the testing layer and runner independently

The current product materials emphasize workflow discovery, a backtest environment, and monitoring/recovery. To move the compute runner, first preserve service fixtures, production-data handling rules, assertions, and expected test evidence. A persistent computer can run tests, but it does not automatically reconstruct external systems or generate representative scenarios.

A demo-led offering does not provide a public compute rate

The current home page invites a demo or discussion rather than publishing numeric subscription, per-test, CPU, or RAM prices. Confirm pricing and included testing services in an effective offer. Do not compare a specialized testing contract with raw machine cost as if it bought identical functionality.

Compare billing models, then price your workload

CPU allocation, memory, billing minimums, disk, plan fees, and supported workload differ. These meters are not equal-performance machine quotes. Confirm region, resource units, and included allowances before estimating a total.

There is no defensible numeric savings comparison between an unpublished testing offer and Sandbox0 compute. Vendor-reported impact figures on the homepage are not independent performance benchmarks and are not used here as outcome guarantees.

Sandbox0

$0.015/GiB-hour compute (billed by the second at approximately $0.000004167/GiB-second), plus $0.02/GiB-month of retained incremental RootFS and memory checkpoint data. Shared base images and platform recovery retention are excluded; paused sandboxes accrue storage charges only.

$6.00 compute

4 GiB × 100 hours, billed by the second. Keeping 20 GiB of billable incremental data for a full billing month adds $0.40. CPU is derived from memory by the platform; choose a tier that fits your workload.

Before migrating from Chronicle Labs

  1. Map workflow fixtures, replay inputs, integration behavior, assertions, evidence, and the separate agent runner before changing infrastructure.
  2. Move compatible runner code and tools into a Sandbox0 template while retaining or implementing the testing and evaluation layer the application needs.
  3. Check comparable test results, then independently validate system persistence, RootFS growth, paused file access, and both compute and testing costs.

Common questions

Is Sandbox0 a drop-in Chronicle Labs replacement?

Evaluate API compatibility and product scope. These products serve different core workflows, so a change may require a different architecture.

Does keeping files also keep a running agent?

Filesystem state and volatile process state are separate. Sandbox0 requires explicit compatible memory checkpoints to preserve running processes; its default filesystem resume starts fresh processes.
