Inference APIs / fal Model APIs, Serverless and Compute alternative

A fal.ai alternative for the agent around model execution

fal offers hosted Model APIs, Serverless deployment of custom applications, and dedicated Compute. Its shared /data filesystem persists across runners and deployments, with file access outside a running app. Compare that useful storage feature with an agent’s complete mutable system and its execution lifecycle.

When fal Model APIs, Serverless and Compute fits

fal fits applications using hosted image, video and audio models or deploying custom GPU inference endpoints. Shared model files, managed scaling and specialized accelerators are relevant strengths.

When to consider Sandbox0

Consider Sandbox0 for the compatible Linux agent that installs tools, accumulates system changes, pauses compute and returns to the same durable RootFS. Keep hosted model APIs or GPU-serving stages on an appropriate provider.

Online RootFS growth

On growth-enabled images, Sandbox0 automatically expands the writable RootFS as free space runs low, within a configured sparse logical ceiling up to 64 TiB. Agent processes keep running. Growth is enabled in the qualified Cloud region; confirm activation for other regions. Existing images and snapshots retain their captured storage geometry. The ceiling is logical capacity, not preallocated host disk.

fal’s /data is a distributed account-wide filesystem for models and files. That is different from automatic online growth of a complete private writable RootFS, including installed tools and /etc configuration. Do not describe fal as lacking persistent or externally accessible files.

Files while compute is paused

Sandbox0's Files API reads persistent files without resuming compute. Filesystem-only pauses also permit edits; retained-memory pauses are read-only and reject mutations with 409. SSH, SFTP, file watching, and runtime-only mounts require running compute.

fal supports external file operations for /data without putting the upload inside an app request. Sandbox0’s distinction is supported access to the whole durable writable RootFS while the original sandbox compute stays paused, with read-only access for retained-memory generations.

Shared persistent files already have external access

The /data volume is account-wide and shared across apps and runners. Files survive requests, restarts and deployments until deleted, with eventual consistency across datacenters. Dashboard, CLI and REST operations support files outside a running app; CLI uploads do not overwrite existing paths. This is selected shared data, rather than retention of every mutable OS path.

Warm runners and paused execution have different costs

Serverless bills runner time per second: setup, idle including keep-alive, processing, draining and termination are billable. Scheduling and image pull are not. Multiple GPUs multiply GPU-seconds. Runner shutdown uses signals and a configurable grace period; a later runner initializes again rather than implying a durable RAM restore.

List, negotiated and dedicated prices are distinct

The public table separates GPU list rates from advertised as-low-as rates for custom deployments. Serverless access requires account approval. Dedicated Compute instead runs continuously and uses instance rates in the dashboard. Hosted Model APIs have their own per-output units, which should not be converted into a generic VM-hour price.

Compare billing models, then price your workload

CPU allocation, memory, billing minimums, disk, plan fees, and supported workload differ. These meters are not equal-performance machine quotes. Confirm region, resource units, and included allowances before estimating a total.

Before migrating from fal Model APIs, Serverless and Compute

  1. Separate Model API calls, Serverless apps and dedicated Compute, then inventory /data files, CDN artifacts, setup code and concurrent writers.
  2. Keep GPU and model-serving calls where appropriate; migrate only portable Linux agent orchestration, system tooling and state.
  3. Test shared-data consistency and upload semantics, user isolation, system-path persistence, paused files, online growth and the full lifecycle bill.

Common questions

Is Sandbox0 a drop-in fal Model APIs, Serverless and Compute replacement?

Evaluate API compatibility and product scope. These products serve different core workflows, so a change may require a different architecture.

Does keeping files also keep a running agent?

Filesystem state and volatile process state are separate. Sandbox0 requires explicit compatible memory checkpoints to preserve running processes; its default filesystem resume starts fresh processes.
