macOS compute / MacinCloud Dedicated / Managed alternative

MacinCloud alternative for portable persistent agents

MacinCloud has distinct Dedicated, Managed and prepaid Pay-as-You-Go products. Dedicated gives full administrator/root access, while Managed and PAYG provide user accounts with administrator tasks handled by support. Pick the actual permission and machine model before comparing returning agent state.

When MacinCloud Dedicated / Managed fits

Choose MacinCloud for Mac software, Xcode and hosted desktop access. Dedicated is the relevant product when installing system-level tools yourself is required; lower-priced managed accounts have a different access boundary.

When to consider Sandbox0

Consider Sandbox0 for compatible Linux agents needing their own durable whole writable RootFS, online automatic growth and supported paused files. Keep native macOS applications, signing and simulator stages on suitable Mac services.

Online RootFS growth

On growth-enabled images, Sandbox0 automatically expands the writable RootFS as free space runs low, within a configured sparse logical ceiling up to 64 TiB. Agent processes keep running. Growth is enabled in the qualified Cloud region; confirm activation for other regions. Existing images and snapshots retain their captured storage geometry. The ceiling is logical capacity, not preallocated host disk.

Dedicated retains its installed Mac system; Managed user quotas and package upgrades are distinct. The plan pages do not establish automatic online low-space expansion of an entire per-agent RootFS.

Files while compute is paused

Sandbox0's Files API reads persistent files without resuming compute. Filesystem-only pauses also permit edits; retained-memory pauses are read-only and reject mutations with 409. SSH, SFTP, file watching, and runtime-only mounts require running compute.

Hosted desktop and user-account access are different from native arbitrary file reads/mutations throughout a stopped system filesystem. The cited plan descriptions do not establish that paused-file interface.

A managed user account is not a root-controlled machine

Managed plans provide preinstalled tools and a user storage quota; support performs advanced administrator tasks. Dedicated explicitly provides full macOS root/sudo access and a dedicated instance. A low managed starting price should not be compared as though it includes the same system-control scope.

PAYG still has prepaid and inactivity conditions

PAYG requires prepaid usage rather than unrestricted postpaid one-hour rental. The page warns of automatic recharge when usage exceeds prepaid credit, no refund/trial and credit expiry after sixty consecutive days without login. Confirm the selected checkout’s prepaid block and billing rules.

Dedicated capacity is a monthly subscription

Current Dedicated packages list Intel, M1, M2 and M4 options with different memory and SSDs. Users bring their software licenses, and Dedicated has no trial. Resource and permission differences matter alongside the monthly price.

CPU allocation, memory, billing minimums, disk, plan fees, and supported workload differ. These meters are not equal-performance machine quotes. Confirm region, resource units, and included allowances before estimating a total.

Sandbox0

$0.015/GiB-hour compute (billed by the second at approximately $0.000004167/GiB-second), plus $0.02/GiB-month of retained incremental RootFS and memory checkpoint data. Shared base images and platform recovery retention are excluded; paused sandboxes accrue storage charges only.

A 4 GiB agent, 100 running hours

$6.00 compute

4 GiB × 100 hours, billed by the second. Keeping 20 GiB of billable incremental data for a full billing month adds $0.40. CPU is derived from memory by the platform; choose a tier that fits your workload.

Before migrating from MacinCloud Dedicated / Managed

  1. Identify Dedicated/Managed/PAYG, admin permissions, user/system data, native apps, prepaid expiry/recharge rules and current add-ons.
  2. Export required portable files and recreate compatible Linux agent stages; keep Mac-native work and necessary licenses on suitable Mac services.
  3. Test artifact handoff, full-system retention, RootFS growth, paused files and combined Mac plan/usage plus Linux runtime costs.

Common questions

Is Sandbox0 a drop-in MacinCloud Dedicated / Managed replacement?

Evaluate API compatibility and product scope. These products serve different core workflows, so a change may require a different architecture.

Does keeping files also keep a running agent?

Filesystem state and volatile process state are separate. Sandbox0 requires explicit compatible memory checkpoints to preserve running processes; its default filesystem resume starts fresh processes.
