macOS compute / OakHost Dedicated Mac Hosting alternative

OakHost alternative for portable Linux agent stages

OakHost rents dedicated Macs in Germany with administrator access, local SSDs and external KVM management. Installed macOS tools and configuration already persist while a machine is retained. Compare those native Mac requirements with portable Linux agent stages rather than treating the operating systems as interchangeable.

When OakHost Dedicated Mac Hosting fits

Choose OakHost for native Mac software, Xcode and dedicated Apple hardware with recovery/boot-level remote access. Keep Apple-specific build, signing and simulator work on a suitable Mac.

When to consider Sandbox0

Consider Sandbox0 for compatible Linux agents needing an automatically growing durable RootFS and supported paused-file operations. Retain Mac-native stages and transfer the relevant repository artifacts between them.

Online RootFS growth

On growth-enabled images, Sandbox0 automatically expands the writable RootFS as free space runs low, within a configured sparse logical ceiling up to 64 TiB. Agent processes keep running. Growth is enabled in the qualified Cloud region; confirm activation for other regions. Existing images and snapshots retain their captured storage geometry. The ceiling is logical capacity, not preallocated host disk.

OakHost already retains whole installed-system SSD state. Changing hardware capacity assigns a new Mac, while backups are a separate responsibility; this differs from integrated automatic online low-space growth of Sandbox0’s supported Linux RootFS.

Files while compute is paused

Sandbox0's Files API reads persistent files without resuming compute. Filesystem-only pauses also permit edits; retained-memory pauses are read-only and reject mutations with 409. SSH, SFTP, file watching, and runtime-only mounts require running compute.

External KVM supports remote access through boot and recovery, but does not itself provide file operations throughout a powered-off Mac’s filesystem. The cited service does not establish a native paused whole-RootFS file API.

A hardware upgrade assigns another Mac

OakHost allows upgrades but cannot upgrade the specific physical Mac in place; it assigns a new upgraded machine. Plan data and configuration transfer before switching. This differs from automatically growing the filesystem of an already running compatible Linux agent.

Backups are the customer’s responsibility

The FAQ says customers are responsible for their own backups. Optional network storage supports Time Machine, but is not an included blanket backup guarantee. A persistent local system disk, recovery KVM and an independent recoverable copy are different capabilities.

Price and stock belong to the exact configuration

The M4.S product lists 16 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD, €115 monthly and no setup fee, excluding VAT. That configuration was marked out of stock when reviewed. Other Mac models have separate prices and inventory; a displayed price does not reserve capacity.

Pricing

Compare billing models, then price your workload

CPU allocation, memory, billing minimums, disk, plan fees, and supported workload differ. These meters are not equal-performance machine quotes. Confirm region, resource units, and included allowances before estimating a total.

These are dedicated physical Mac subscriptions, not isolated Linux vCPU quotes. Confirm inventory, location, traffic allowance, optional backup storage, tax and cancellation terms. Hardware upgrades assign a different Mac and need a state-transfer plan.

Before migrating from OakHost Dedicated Mac Hosting

  1. Inventory the exact Mac, local system/user data, independent backups, native toolchain, inventory and hardware-upgrade transfer requirements.
  2. Export portable agent files and rebuild compatible Linux stages; retain required Apple builds, signing and simulators on suitable Macs.
  3. Test artifact handoff, retained tools, online growth, paused files and combined Mac subscription, backup/storage and Linux runtime costs.

Common questions

Is Sandbox0 a drop-in OakHost Dedicated Mac Hosting replacement?

Evaluate API compatibility and product scope. These products serve different core workflows, so a change may require a different architecture.

Does keeping files also keep a running agent?

Filesystem state and volatile process state are separate. Sandbox0 requires explicit compatible memory checkpoints to preserve running processes; its default filesystem resume starts fresh processes.
