macOS compute / MacStadium Macs / Orka alternative

MacStadium alternative for portable persistent agents

MacStadium offers dedicated physical Macs and Orka macOS virtualization for build fleets. A retained bare-metal Mac already preserves its installed system on SSD. Compare native Apple capacity with portable Linux agent work, and distinguish hardware subscription pricing from an Orka deployment quote.

When MacStadium Macs / Orka fits

Choose MacStadium for native Apple development, dedicated Mac infrastructure and Orka-managed Mac virtualization. Keep Xcode, Apple SDKs, simulators and signing on appropriate Apple infrastructure.

When to consider Sandbox0

Consider Sandbox0 for compatible Linux agent stages that need one durable writable RootFS, automatic online growth and supported paused files. A combined pipeline can retain the required Mac build fleet while moving portable orchestration and repository work.

Online RootFS growth

On growth-enabled images, Sandbox0 automatically expands the writable RootFS as free space runs low, within a configured sparse logical ceiling up to 64 TiB. Agent processes keep running. Growth is enabled in the qualified Cloud region; confirm activation for other regions. Existing images and snapshots retain their captured storage geometry. The ceiling is logical capacity, not preallocated host disk.

MacStadium retains complete installed-system SSDs on dedicated Macs. Device capacity and Orka image/storage planning are separate from Sandbox0’s automatic low-space online growth of a compatible Linux RootFS.

Files while compute is paused

Sandbox0's Files API reads persistent files without resuming compute. Filesystem-only pauses also permit edits; retained-memory pauses are read-only and reject mutations with 409. SSH, SFTP, file watching, and runtime-only mounts require running compute.

Physical Mac remote access and Orka management are not themselves native arbitrary file operations on a paused machine’s entire OS disk. The cited offerings do not establish that specific file interface; operator tooling needs its own consistency plan.

Individual hardware and Orka have different scope

The pricing page separates individual hosted Macs from virtualization solutions. Orka uses Apple’s native virtualization framework to manage Mac VMs and can be deployed in different environments. A listed individual Mac price is not a verified all-inclusive Orka cluster price.

A retained physical Mac already has complete system disks

Individual configurations include real Mac hardware, SSD capacity, macOS and dedicated connectivity. That preserves installed tools and configuration while the machine is retained. VM image and disposal policies in an Orka fleet require separate review; they should not inherit every physical-host lifecycle assumption.

Monthly capacity and annual terms are distinct

Individual bare-metal subscriptions use monthly prepayment, while annual and multi-year options have other terms. MacStadium does not offer a standard free trial for individual hardware, though enterprise proof-of-concept arrangements may be discussed. Do not interpret a monthly server allocation as a per-second agent runtime.

Compare billing models, then price your workload

CPU allocation, memory, billing minimums, disk, plan fees, and supported workload differ. These meters are not equal-performance machine quotes. Confirm region, resource units, and included allowances before estimating a total.

Confirm location, hardware inventory, monthly versus annual terms, virtualization/support scope and tax. Dedicated Mac hardware and isolated Linux runtime resources are different workloads; no equal-throughput or universal savings claim follows from the monthly references.

Before migrating from MacStadium Macs / Orka

  1. Separate individual Macs from Orka deployment, inventory local/VM data and native toolchains, and record subscription and support terms.
  2. Export portable agent files and recreate Linux-compatible tools while retaining required Mac build/signing and simulator stages.
  3. Test handoff, installed-system retention, online growth, paused files and combined Mac hardware/Orka plus Linux runtime costs.

Common questions

Is Sandbox0 a drop-in MacStadium Macs / Orka replacement?

Evaluate API compatibility and product scope. These products serve different core workflows, so a change may require a different architecture.

Does keeping files also keep a running agent?

Filesystem state and volatile process state are separate. Sandbox0 requires explicit compatible memory checkpoints to preserve running processes; its default filesystem resume starts fresh processes.
